emergency shutdown: Rapid shutdown of the wind turbine triggered by a protection function or by manual intervention.
environmental conditions: Characteristics of the environment (wind, altitude, temperature, humidity, etc.) which may affect the wind turbine behavior.
external conditions (wind turbines): Factors affecting operation of a wind turbine, including the environmental conditions (temperature, snow, ice, etc.) and the electrical network conditions.
fail-safe mechanism: Design property of an item which prevents its failures from resulting in critical faults. furl: To reduce the angle of attack of the blade and decrease the aerodynamic load.
gust: Temporary change in the wind speed. A gust may be characterized by its rise-time, its magnitude and its duration.
horizontal-axis wind turbine (HAWT): Wind turbine whose rotor axis is substantially horizontal. hub: Fixture for attaching the blades or blade assembly to the rotor shall.
idling (wind turbines): Condition of a wind turbine that is rotating slowly and not producing power.
nacelle: Housing which contains the drive-train and other elements on top of a horizontal-axis wind turbine tower.
natural frequency: The frequency rate at which an object vibrates when it is not disturbed by an outside force.
non-destructive testing: The process of inspecting, testing, or evaluating materials, components or assemblies for discontinuities, or differences in characteristics without destroying the serviceability of the part or system.
nose cone: The streamlined external protective cover of the hub.
operating limits: Set of conditions defined by the wind turbine designer that govern the activation of the control and protection system.
overload torque of pitch motor: The maximum continuous torque in the given time period available at the design speed that allows the pitch motor to do the work without overheating.
pitch angle: Here is the blade pitch angle for short, it is the angle between the chord line at the blade tip and the plane of rotation.
rated torque of pitch motor: The maximum continuous torque available at the design speed that allows the pitch motor to do the work without overheating.
rated voltage of pitch motor: The maximum value of voltage beyond which the pitch motor will not be operating according to its desired operation, it is marked on the name plate of pitch motors.
rotor: The rotor is composed of the blades and the hub, converting wind energy into mechanical energy. rotor speed: Rotational speed of a wind turbine rotor about its axis.
spectrum analysis: Analysis in terms of a spectrum of frequencies or related quantities such as energies, eigenvalues, etc.
vertical-axis wind turbine: Wind turbine whose rotor axis is substantially vertical.
wind turbine: The mechanical equipment transforming wind kinetic energy into other forms of energy. wind turbine generator system (WTGS): The system converts kinetic energy of wind into electric energy. yaw: Rotation of the rotor axis about a vertical axis (for horizontal-axis wind turbines only).
yaw bearing: The main components of the yaw system that rotatably connect between the tower and the nacelle of the wind turbine.
yaw misalignment: Horizontal deviation of the wind turbine rotor axis from the wind direction.
yaw system: The yaw orientation system that keeps the rotor shaft properly aligned with the wind. For the active yaw system in up-wind turbines, it is composed of the active yaw drive, automatic yaw control system and breaks, etc.
4. General
The wind rotor system of the wind turbine generator system (WTGS) includes blade, hub, pitch system, and yaw system.
The defects of hub, blade, and other components should be tested and judged by nondestructive test, and technical repair shall be made correspondingly. The surface texture. material aging, and mechanical property deterioration of the components should be inspected, and the damage status of the materials should be evaluated.
If components need test in batch, the component(s) shall have the batch number and be delivered with the corresponding test report. If the component needs testing one by one, the component shall be given a unique number and be delivered with the corresponding test report.
Quality confIrmation shall he done before installation, which includes two main processes: manufacture and transport. The component quality test shall be done within the factory. All the components shall be packed and transported carefully, keeping the original condition. Superficial defect and document check shall be taken before installation.
