16 Fault-Current Test
16.1 The equipment-grounding path provided by the metal conduit shall not open when previously untested specimens of the finished conduit are subjected to a cun’ent of:
a) 470 A for 4 seconds for trade sizes of 3/8 and 112 inches:
b) 750 A for 4 seconds for trade sizes 3/4, 1. and 1-1/4-inches.
16.1.1 The requirement in 16.1 applies to all types of flexible metal conduit covered by this standard.
16.2 The test specimens of finished flexible metal conduit shall each be 6 ft (1.8 m) long. A flexible metal
conduit fitting that is acceptable for the size of conduit being tested and for connecting a test specimen to
a solid copper bus bar is to be Installed on each end of each test specimen.
16.3 Each bus bar end, opposite where the conduit connection is made. is to be connected to two 36-inch (914-mm) lengths of 3/0 AWG copper conductors in parallel. The bus bar ends where the conduit connection Is made are to be connected together. The free ends of each pair ol copper conductors are to be connected together, and then each of the two parallel pairs is to be connected so that one pair is connected to each side of an adjustable nominal 600V AC supply circuit. This supply is to be adjusted to deliver the test current, Without disturbing this adlustment. the supply is to be turned off and the bus bars are to be separated.
16,4 The bus bars are then to be attached to the conduit connectors that have been assembled to each end of the test specimen. The specimen is to be laid out (essentially straight) on a wide, flat, horizontal surface of fire-resistant, chemically inert, and electrically nonconductive material. After this connection is made the supply is to be energized, and the test current is to be passed through the specimen for 4 seconds.
16.5 The conduit does not comply If it melts or otherwise opens the circuit during the 4-second current flow.
MARKINGS
17 Details
17.1 Maker
17.1.1 If the organization responsible for the conduit produces flexible steel conduit or flexible aluminum conduit in only one factory, the factory need not be identified on the conduit.
17.1.2 If the organization responsible for the conduit produces flexible steel conduit or flexible aluminum conduit in more than one factory, all of the conduit that is produced by or for that organization shall be identified as the pmduct of a particular factory. The factory identification shall be permanent and shall consist of a letter or symbol indented into or embossed on the outer surface of the conduit at intervals no longer than 12 inches (305 mm). The absence of this marking may be used to identify one factory. The meaning of each identification shall be made available.
17.2 AlumInum
17.2.1 The outer surface of flexible aluminum conduit shall be indented or embossed with the letters AL at intervals no longer than 12 inches (305 mm).
17.3 Tag
17.3.1 The following statement or Its equivalent shall be marked on a tag attached to each Coil of aluminum or steel reduced-wall flexible metal conduit (RWFMC),When applying setscrew-type connectors, care should be taken not to damage the conduir.
17.3.2 Each coil of flexible steel and aluminum conduit shall be marked or tagged to indicate the following plainly:
a) The name of the manufacturer, that manutacturers trade name for the conduit, or both, or any other acceptable distinctive marking by means of which the organization responsible for the conduit can readily be identified.
b) The date of manufacture by month and year.
C) The trade size of the conduit.
d) Use only with connectors intended for this type of conduit. – Cartons for these connectors are marked as follows:
Connectors for use with FMC (flexible metal conduit): For FMC or FMC
Connectors for use with steel (FE) or aluminum (AL) FMC only:
For FE FMC’ or ‘FEFMC ‘Foi STEEL FMC or ‘STEELFMC ‘Fo AL FMC or ALFMC For ALUM FMC or ‘ALUMFMC’ For ALUMINUM FMC or ALUMINUMFMC
Connectors for use with reduced-wall FMC (RWFMC) only: For RWFMC or RWFMC Connectors for use with steel (FE) or aluminum (AL) reduced-wall FMC (RWFMC) only:
For FE RWFMC or FERWFMC
For STEEL RWFMC or STEELRWFMC
For AL RWFMC or ALRWFMC’
For ALUM RWFMC or ALUMRWFMC’
For ALUMINUM RWFMC or ALUMINUMRWFMC.
