6.3 Nonmetallic
6.3.1 A polymeric material used as part or all of an enclosure of a capacitor module shall comply with the applicable requirements in the Standard for Polymeric Materials — Use in Electrical Equipment Evaluations. UL 746C.
6.3.2 A polymeric material used as a capacitor casing shall:
a) Be dassed V-2 minimum in accordance with the Standard for Tests for Flammability of
Plastic Materials for Parts in Devices and Appliances, UL 94, or
b) Comply with the 20 mm (3/4-inch) flame flammability test spectied in the Standard for Polymeric Materials – Use in Electrical Equipment Evaluations. UL 746C.
6.3.3 Among the factors that shall be taken into consderahon when investigating the acceptability of a nonmetallic material for a capacitor module endosure or a capacitor casing with respect to its intended application are:
a) Mechanical strength:
b) Moisture-absorbent properties;
c) Combustibility;
d) Compatibility with electrolyte and other mediums in contact with:
Note: Compfiance shall be determined by the Practice A – Immersion Test in Standard Practices for Evaluating the Resistance of Plastics to Chemical Reagents. ASTM D543, using the fluid in contact with as the test fluid and immersing materials for 168 hours. As a result of the test, there shall be no visible signs of decomposition such as crazing, bubbling, cracking, swelling, tackiness, etc. There shall be no change in weight in excess of 25 percent increase or 10 percent decrease the original weight.
e) Resistance to arcing;
f) Dielectric strength;
g) Aging characteristics: and
h) Resistance to cstortion at maximum temperature, which the enclosure/casing may be
subiected under conditions of normal or abnormal use.
6.3.4 A nonmetallic enclosure/casing material that also functions as an insulator shall comply with Insulating Materials. Section 7.
7 InsulatIng MaterIals
7.1 A material used for mounting of uninsulated capacitor terminals wtiose deterioration could lead to a risk of fire or electric shock condition shall comply with the requwements specified in the material property considerations table, of the Standard for Polymeric Matenals — Use In Electrical Equipment Evaluations, UL 746C.
Exception: A polymeric material provided as insulation shall:
a) Be classed V.2 minimum in accordance with the Standard for Tests for Flammability of Plastic Materials for Parts In Devices and Appliances, UL 94, or
b) Comply with the 20 mm (3/4-inch) flame flammability test specified in the Standard for Polymeric Materials — Use In Electrical Equipment Evaluations. UL 746C.
7.2 Internal insulating material shall comply with the applicable requirements for the Dielectric Voltage-Withstand Test, Section 19.
7,3 An internal insulator between the capacitor elements and the metal casing of the capacitor shall be moisture resistant and shall be resistant to deterioration from the materials it is exposed to The Volume Change and Extraction Tests shall determine compliance after immersion for 70 hours in the contact fluid per the Standard for Gaskets and Seals, UL 157. See the Standard Test Method for Rubber Property — Effect of Liquids, ASTM D471, for equivalent methods There shall be no volume change (swelling) greater than 25 percent and no extraction (weight 1065) less than 10 percent of the original.
7.4 A metal casing of a capacitor that is not provided with insulation from the capacitor elements and electrolyte in accordance With 7.2 and 7.3 shall be considered an uninsulated pan.
8 Insulated Leads and Terminals
8.1 An insulated lead of a capacitor/module shall be rated for the voltage and current involved, The temperature rating of the insulation of a capacitor lead shall not be less than the temperature rating of the capacitor.
8.2 The connection of an insulated lead inside a capacitor shall be secure. Strain relief shall be provided and shall comply With the Pull-out test, Section 11.1.
Exception: Bare leads provided for securing the capacitor to a printed wiring board need not comply with the Pull-Out Test of Section 11.1. Bare leads prowded for this purpose shall comply with the material and minimum thickness requirements outlined in 8.3.
8.3 Capacitors with wiring terminals shall have terminals provided with a soldering lug, pressure terminal connection, wire-binding screw, or quick-connect terminal rated for securing the size of the conductor to be connected. The terminal material shall be at least 0.02 ich (0.51 mm) thick and shall be of copper, copper alloy, tin-plated steel, or other metal rated for the application.
