9.1.5.2 Assessment
9.1.5.2.1 Manufacturers should conduct a full inventory of all product and packaging materials and determine which are eligible for consolidation or elimination. Many parts, such as those for structure, safety, basic performance, or sanitation, are not eligible for reduction. Therefore, the first important step in dematerialization is the inventory.
9.1.5.2.2 The product shall be evaluated based on the following metrics:
a) The product shall receive 1 point if the manufacturer can demonstrate that it has conducted an inventory of the materials and identified materials that are eligible for reduction.
b) The product shall receive 2 points if the manufacturer can demonstrate a reduction in the
total mass of materials, design simplification, or use of higher performance materials that result in a reduction in materials. In order to receive these points, the manufacturer shall demonstrate one or more of the following:
i) a reduction in the total mass of materials;
ii) a design simplification that results in a reduction of the type of materials;
iii) a reduction in the total number of components;
iv) the use of higher-performance materials that results in a reduction of mass or number of components; or
v) a reduction in manufacturing process scrap materials.
9.1.5.2.3 If the company does not have a fixed baseline at present for comparison, units with similar features produced within the preceding five years shall be used for comparison. If the company does not have a similar unit from previous production for comparison (e.g., the company is producing and introducing into the market a totally new model family), the manufacturer should review the materials and components against that used for other similar size products in the previous five-year period. The new model or current model shall be compared against the baseline unit produced within the last five years for mass, materials, and number of components to determine if a reduction has been made.
9.1.5.2.4 The decrease shall be calculated based on a rolling five-year average, with supporting documentation. If a particular model is made at more than one location and a reduction in dematerialization can be demonstrated at only one manufacturing location, no points are awarded.
9.1.5.2.5 The points in this category are cumulative to a maximum of 3 points.
9.2 Attribute: Energy consumption during use
9.2.1 General
9.2.1.1 A maximum of 45 points are available under this attribute.
9.2.1.2 Evaluation of energy consumption of the product shall apply to the use phase.
9.2.1.3 The evaluation criteria for energy consumption shall follow current energy efficiency metrics.
Note: U.S. Department of Energy minimum federal energy efficiency standards are based on the Energy Policy and Conservation Act, as amended. The following criteria are in keeping with the current DoE minimum energy performance requirements and the Canadian federal Energy Efficiency Regulations requirements for clothes dryers. The criteria in this attribute are based on the current ENERGY STAR® program for clothes dryers as administered by the U.S. EPA and Natural Resources Canada.
9.2.2 Assessment
9.2.2.1 The product shall be evaluated based on the following criteria:
a) The product shall be in compliance at the time of its initial placement on the market and throughout its manufacturing phase.
b) The product shall be listed in a recognized independent third-party registry.
Note: Examples of recognized independent third-party registry include the Clothes Dryer Energy Verification Program operated by the Association of Home Appliance Manufacturers (AHAM) or the accredited Energy Efficiency Certification Bodies recognized by the Standard Council of Canada.
c) The product shall be evaluated based on the following metrics:
i) For all electric dryers (compact, standard, vented, ventless):
The product shall receive the number of points that corresponds to the combined
energy factor (CEF) as indicated in the table below.
