8 Fire Test
8.1 Samples of each size container, with the head or cover and liner, if provided, in place is to be subjected to 82 — 8.7.
8,2 Each container is to be placed on a 3/4 inch (19,1 mm) thick painted (black) plywood sheet, freestanding in a draft free room and away from any walls or other obstructions. Three thermocouples are to be placed on the surface ot the plywood under the container on a line representing the diameter or centerline of the container body, One thermocouple is to be placed in the center of the container and the other two are to be placed along the centerline of the container at 116 of the distance from each edge.
8,3 Separate tests are to be conducted with each container filled 1/3 full, 2)3 full, and completely full of shredded, fluffed newspaper. which is to be ignited by a match. The width of the strips of newspaper shall be 0.20 ±0.10 Inch. The shredded paper, when In place In the container, is to have a bulk density of 5.1 oztft3 (5.16 kg/rn3). If the container is equipped with a lid that is not of the self-closing type, the tire test is to be conducted with the lid open.
8.4 The tests shall indicate that the container assembly eltectively contains the contents, reduces the duration and intensity of combustion and shall extinguish the fire in accordance with 8.5 — 87,
8.5 The maximum temperature attained on the plywood during the tests on the container assembly shall not exceed the test ambient temperature by more than 79CC (175”F).
8.6 The tests are to be conducted at any ambient temperature within the range of 10— 40’C (50— 104°F).
8.7 The container assembly shall extinguish the fire within 20 minutes of ignition and at least 25 percent by weight of unburned paper shall remain.
MARKING

b) A distinctive (“catalor or moder) number or the equivalent:
C) The date or other dating period of manufacture not exceeding any three consecutive months.
Exception No. 1: The manufacturer’s idenftfication may be in a fraceabe code if the product Is identified by the brand or trademark owned by a private labeler.
Exception No. 2: The date of manufacture may be abbreviated: or may be in a nationally accepted conventional code or in a code affirmed by the manufacturer, provided that the code:
a) Does not repeat in less than 10 years for a household product and less than 20 years for a commercial product. and
b) Does not require reference to the production records of the manufacturer to determine when the product was manufactured.
SA2.2 Three samples of each container size being investigated are to be dropped five times from a height of 5 feet (1.52 m) onto a concrete floor so as to strike once on the bottom, the top, the side, a top corner, and a bottom corner.
SA3 Internal Fire Test
SA3.1 When tested as specified in SA33 — SA3,6, a container shall remain in a standing position. The sides shall not deform to the extent that the sample will no longer contain the contents.
SA3.2 The temperatures attained on the plywood floor and the adjacent wall during the tests shall not exceed 175CC (347F).
SA33 Three containers are to be located in a draft free room and prepared for tests as specified in SA3.4 and SA3.5.
SA3.4 Three containers are to be filled with shredded and fluffed newspaper. One container is to be 1/3 full, the second is to be 2/3 full and the third is to be completely full, The shredded and flulfed newspaper, when in place in the container, is to have a bulk density of 5.1 ozftt3 (5.16 km).
SA3,5 Each container as described in SA3.4 is to be placed free standing 1 inch (25.4 mm) from a 3/4 inch thick (19.1 mm) thick black-painted plywood wall and on a 3/4 inch thick black-painted plywood sheet. The vertical height of the wall shall not exiend beyond the top edge of the container under test. Three ttierrnocouples are to be placed on the surface of the plywood floor under each container on a line simulating the longitudinal axis of the base of the container, if rectangular, or on a line representing the diameter of the container, if cylindrical. An additional three thermocouples shall be placed on the vertical wall spaced evenly along the vertical axis of the container,
SA3.6 Ignite the contents in each container by placing a lighted match on the top center of the contents.
