IEEE Std 572-2019 pdf download.IEEE Standard for Qualification of Class 1 E Connection Assemblies for Nuclear Power Generating Stationsand Other Nuclear Facilities.
Connection assemblies located in a mild environment area where the environment does not exceed the postulated normal and abnormal conditions during a DBE (except seismic) may not require pre-aging prior to seismic testing to establish a qualified life or qualified condition. This is appropriate where data has demonstrated that the connection assembly can perform its Class 1E function and has no significant aging mechanisms. If data shows that the connection assembly can perform its Class IE function, then the equipment’s qualified life and qualified condition may be equated to its design life. If evaluations of designs and applications of particular connection assemblies so indicate, pre-aging prior to seismic testing is not required by this standard. However, if the connector is disconnected for maintenance, periodic testing, or surveillance, then the number of connect-disconnect operations shall be simulated prior to seismic testing. The documentation required to qualify the connection assembly may be less than that required for connection assemblies described in the preceding paragraph.
For all qualification, the end result shall be documentation that demonstrates the connection assembly’s adequacy to perform its Class IE function(s). The documentation shall be in an auditable form that allows verification by competent personnel, other than the qualifier, and shall contain the connection assembly’s qualification specification, documents that demonstrate compliance with the qualification specification and installation requirements, periodic inspection and maintenance requirements, summaries, in formation for maintaining qualification, and conclusions.
5. Principles of connection assembly qualification
An objective of qualification is to establish a qualified life for connection assemblies. The qualified life of the connection assemblies shall be expressed in years. Qualification of connection assemblies shall be accomplished using either a specific or generic qualification process:
a) specific qualification: In specific qualification, the qualification specification requirements are established for a specific application. The qualification program shall be defined to demonstrate a connection assembly’s operability, with margin, under all applicable service conditions.
b) generic qualification: In generic qualification, the qualification specification requirements are established for a generic set of requirements designed to envelope a number of applications. To establish qualification for a specific application, the specific requirements plus margin shall be equal to or less severe than the generic qualification requirements.
The specific or generic qualification of the Class IE connection assembly and its interfaces shall be accomplished by using one or more of the methods described in 5.1 through 5.5.
5.1 Qualification by type testing
Type testing of a sample connection assembly is the preferred method of qualification. The type tests shall be designed to demonstrate that the connection assembly is capable, for its qualified life, of performing its Class 1E function during and/or after being subjected to stresses due to specified service conditions, including DBE. The tests shall simulate conditions that meet or exceed the expected or specified service conditions, with margin, at the location of the connection assembly(s). Test samples shall be assembled by documented production assembly methods and then subjected to the test program. The components of the sample connection assemblies shall he selected at random if in production, or a prototype shall be manufactured and assembled using simulated production procedures. The sample connection assembly shall be mounted in a manner that represents the most severe or actual plant application. The cable part of the connection assembly shall be qualified in accordance with IEEE Std 383-2015. Qualification by type testing shall include the analysis necessary to demonstrate the following:
a) The specimen or test sample is generically equivalent to the assembly in actual plant application to allow direct application, interpolation, or extrapolation of the test results.
b) The test conditions are at least as severe as the sen’ice conditions, plus margin, including DBEs, extreme natural events and severe accidents given in the qualification specification (sec 6. 1).
5.2 Qualification by operating experience
Performance data from connection assemblies of similar design that have successfully operated under known service conditions may be used in qualifying other connection assemblies to equal or less severe conditions. Applicability of this data depends on the adequacy of documentation establishing past service conditions, connection assemblies performance, and similarity against the connection assemblies to be qualified, and upon which operating experience exists. The known service conditions shall equal or exceed the new service conditions plus margin. A demonstration of required operability during applicable design basis event(s) shall be included in connection assembly programs based on operating experience. when design basis event qualification is required.
